Syllabus
Description
RISE is designed to meet the cognitive and affective needs of academically gifted students. In this class students will build on the critical thinking, problem-solving, research, and communication skills they learned in EPIC. Units of study enable the students to operate at complex levels of thought while studying communication arts at an accelerated rate.
1st Quarter and 4th Quarter
All RISE students will be studying an enrichment program of science (roller coaster physics, math (real-world math), language arts (writings of Edgar Allan Poe). These studies will share in-depth information for the students that are based in facts. Group assignments, primarily accomplished in class will assist the students in their learning process.
2nd and 3rd quarter
Both seventh and eighth grades will be researching, selecting a topic, producing a project for National History Day. This is a long-term project that can be produced individually or in a group. for more information, please see the National History Day tab at the top of this page. Students will also be reading and discussing "The Gifted Teen Survival Guide" dealing with the blessings and trials of having a high intelligence.
Inappropriate Behavior
The guidelines in the student handbook will be followed for inappropriate behavior choices. If a student chooses to behave in a manner hindering the learning process, the following steps may occur:
1. verbal warning
2. student will remain after class for a brief conference with Mrs. Stockam
3. if behavior continues, a disciplinary referral will be issued according to the student handbook
Make-Up Work
Attending class is vital. Students are responsible to ask for missed work. Each day absent equals one day to complete missed assignments; therefore, assignments should e completed in three days if three days of school are missed. Tests must be made up as soon as possible and may have to be taken before or after school.
Late Work
Any assignment not turned in on the date due will be considered late and the student will have one more day to turn it in. The student should come to class at 7:30 a.m. the next school day to make-up the assignment. If a student does not complete the assignment in two days, a phone call to the parent will be made. If the work is not turned in on the thrid day a discipline referral will be issued. No late work will be accepted past the end of the grading quarter.
Electronic Devices
Cell phones will be placed in the student's locker at the beginning of the day and will remain until 3:10 dismissal. Use of i-Pods, i-Pads, MP3 players or other such electronic devices will not be permitted in the classroom unless necessary for the student's History Day project. E-book readers (Kindle, Nook) may be permitted under the discretion of Mrs. Stockam. The material being read and the safe-keeping of the E-book will be considered.
